So, the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was Saturday night at the Washington Hilton Hotel, and Mike Allen of The Washington Post won the Merriman Smith Award for outstanding presidential coverage under deadline pressure, for his coverage of Bush's secret Thanksgiving trip to Iraq. Of course, Mikey was only newspaper reporter on a trip which was the darling fait accompli of all the Bushies this last holiday season, so I have to say it really comes as absolutely no surprise the one reporter present won an award from the White House. It really freaks me out, btw, the agenda of this administration to amp up the scope of presidential powers to the degree they are being pushed since Idiotboy took office. The Shrub feels Congress has no business questioning how he's doing his job, and the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction over whether or not policy directly affecting the public interest should be set by oil companies in meetings which take place behind closed, locked doors - this despite the fact they are the 3rd federal court to hear arguments on the subject, the White House having already lost its case twice. And it incenses me beyond belief that Antonin Scalia refuses to recuse himself from hearing the case inspite of his friendship with Cheney and the benefits of that friendship Scalia has enjoyed since Cheney took office. Scalia calls the case unnecessary snooping. You gotta love that. The blatant corruption running rampant thru government right now is nothing less than astonishing. As a kid who grew up in a household which was violently and strictly about doing the right thing, behaving honestly, telling the truth, giving 110% to every undertaking, and doing every single thing I did correctly, it pushes me to the limits of my patience just to read the news about business in Washington most of the time these days. Porn Surfers, Beware And here's a fun little dig at John Ashcroft. :) Hot Hot Hot Boy, am I boring these days, or *what*? ::sigh:: Fine. Here's today's photo. For the googlers, it's from South Africa, it loves heat, it's drought tolerant once established, loves sandy soil (or any well-drained, I would imagine), is evergreen in nice hot areas and semi-evergreen in frost, propagates from cutting or seed, blooms practically year round here, and is a great big, mounding shrub that in Southern California gets to be 8 - 10' tall and probably as wide. I like it a lot. It can also grow as a vine to 12' or more. The blue flowers (there's also a white, alba) are about 1.5 - 2" in diameter and come in different blue colors, so if you want a particular blue, buy a plant blooming so you can see what color it is. It also grows in Hawaii, so aloha, Hawaiian plant googlers. :)
