Ashley Smith, the woman who told police she managed to win over her kidnapper by reading him passages from the religious-themed tome The Purpose Driven Life turns out to not be quite the perfect Christian the religious right likes to play her up to be when they claim it was her faith in God that set her free. Uh, yeah. God and some meth. The chapter she read to him was titled "Using What God Gave Me." I was really unaware God had taken up dealing, but perhaps I'm poorly informed. I just love that she's being held up as this paragon of faith and level-headedness, when seriously, all she did was give her illegal drugs to another frigging druggie, who then trusted her enough to let her go. Of course he trusted her. She gave him drugs and he was high. Apparently, Ashley truly got God during her 7-hour ordeal. Not enough to be honest with the police about how she really got free, though. She saved that information for her new book. I guess you only have to tell the truth when there's a book deal in the works. It's pretty fucked up the religious right is holding her up as a hero to the faith. Then again, I don't have an agenda to push that consistently misrepresents itself, so what the hell do I know? Peace out, ps. enough with the hate mail. i am not anti-god. i just think - and i think i was pretty clear in this - that it is hypocritical to misrepresent what happened as being all about the book "the purpose driven life", when *methamphetamine* was involved. had she been honest about the meth from the start, i might have a different opinion. but she wasn't. she did, in fact, LIE. she has so far made $70,000 or more, thanks to that lie; she is the darling of the press circuit and is praised far and wide, held up as something which is not true, while she saved the truth for her frigging *book*. so i'm sorry, but i find that dishonest, misrepresentational, and hypocritical. if you do not, then look inside *yourself*, don't hate at me because i do. po, kd copyright 2002
