Katie Doyle, Girl About Town

Friday, Sept. 30, 2005 - 4:49 p.m.

I am happy as all get-out to tell you the fire changed direction about 3 or 4 miles from here and moved back the way it had originally come. I assume today it's under control, since it moved back into the area it had already burned, and the news isn't really talking about it today. The Valley is still pretty full of smoke though, and I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night, what with the breathing and episodic asthma issues. I ended up having to sleep with my face right in front of the air filter, breathing only the filtered air.

We stood out last night and watched the smoke edge closer, then the winds picked up blowing it straight toward us. We'd been able to watch the flames through the smoke and all of it coming closer for a while, when the wind changed again and started it back toward it's point of origin. Which was totally awesome, at least from our point of view. There were some tense moments early in the evening, when we lost power for a bit. The neighborhood got restless, and we promised our neighbors across the street that we'd let them know if the flames made it closer. Being on the highest peak in the whole neighborhood, we're in a pretty good position to see what's going on nearly 360 degrees around. After that, the housemate stopped giving me grief for saying that maybe we should consider a plan of action should we need to evacuate. Seems when another *man* says he's already gathered his stuff up and set it by the door, the housemate feels there's merit to that. Which made me want to hit him, because up until then, he'd been calling me "an alarmist" and mocking me to everyone he talked to, just because I said perhaps we should think about what we would do if they told us to evacuate.

I hate men.

At any rate, we did not have to evacuate, and there seems to be no danger of it now, so woohoo. :)

We will return to our regularly-scheduled Tuesday Treasures and Friday Finds next week...or maybe tomorrow, but for now, I have a lot of stuff to do.
