You guys know I'm opposed to the invasion/occupation of Iraq. But I also think that, regardless of how or why we ended up there, we have to fix the mess we've made before we come home.

I'm working on a show right now that really has the ring of propaganda. It exists solely to paint the situation in Iraq in the rosiest shades possible, and make us look like flawless heroes, and I feel like I've sold my soul to the devil. HOWEVER: that being said, there was a portion of interview I transcribed tonight I think really sums up the situation and the responsibility we have to make it right. I'm printing it here in its entirety, and it was the most coherent answer he gave during the entire interview. I wish I could give the speaker credit, but I think I might get into trouble if I do that. Suffice to say, it's coming from a USMC NCO groundpounder who's done his time in The Sand and looks like he's maybe 24 years old. I can't give you more than that.

"What I hope to see happen in Iraq is that, well first, to get all the troops outta there. Eventually. Once the job is done, but uh, I wanna see that Iraq can take care of itself. And take care of its own problems and have their government strong and stable, and their military strong and stable. And I just wanna see them be able to take care of everything on their own, where they don't need us anymore, so we can get our guys outta there. You know, so that, you know, we got--there's other things in the world that are startin' to brew up, you know? And Iraq is still one of them, but we need to start slowly, you know, handin' it over to these guys, so they can start dealing with it on their own. And I know it's hard - it's gonna be really hard. It's gonna take years before that happens. But you know, it's some--that's what I wanna see. I wanna see them take care of their own, and then our guys, every, every last guy back. Where he belongs."
